Full description

Engraving of a grandfather clock decorated with moving automata figures, with portraits of Sir Isaac Newton and Mr. Henry Bridges in the top corners. The Microcosm was an astronomical clock made by Henry Bridges of Waltham Abbey. Standing 10 to 12 feet high, and six feet across the base, the clock included astronomical models of the solar system and tiered scenes with small moving figures. The Microcosm was first advertised for exhibition in 1733. Print on the back dates the engraving: “Exhibited Fleet Street 1750.” The script text reads: “The Microcosm. To the most high puissant, and noble prince James Bridges Duke and Baron of Chandos, Marquis and Earl of Caernarvon, Viscount Wilton, Governor of the Turkey Company and Baronet, this plate is most humbly inscribed by his grace's most obedient and most oblig'd servant. Henry Bridges.”
