Learning About Common Things, frontispiece

The frontispieces for Learning about Common Things by Jacob Abbott from “The Little Learner” series, published in New York by Harper & Bros., 1855. Held at the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, 23h2776.
Full description
A mother gently touches a young girl's back, urging her forward, and points, directing her attention to a tree. In the distance stands a modest country home. Where other frontispieces in this series show reading books, here the mother teaches her child how to read the material world. The visual similarity to Abbott's reading frontispiece suggests these are comparable activities, or different kinds of reading, both requiring explicit instruction.
