Full description
The title spread for Bryan's chapter on “Mechanics.” The left page shows educational aids and diagrams demonstrating the screw and pendulum, two simple machines shown combined to make a rudimentary clockwork mechanism, while the title page lists the chapter contents. Note that the chapter concludes by reflecting on human anatomy, a subject often covered as a subtopic of mechanics, enabling children to see their mastery of mechanical philosophy as a way of governing their own bodies.
