Picturesque Grammar of the English Language

This grammar toy for young children was created around the same time as George Mudie’s playful grammar book/toy hybrid. Several repeat character types familiar from children's moral tales, such as the charitable good child or the girl who sews neatly. The explanations of parts of speech draw upon children's play activities rather than work, indicating the primary audience is young middle-class children. The word “conjuction,” or joining two things together, is shown here as a man and woman riding together, with the hint of marriage. Mudie compares a conjuction to a hinge that joins the door to its frame.
