The Toy-shop, Newbery frontispiece

The frontispiece for The Toy-shop, or, Sentimental Preceptor: Containing Some Choice Trifles, for the Amusement of Every Little Miss and Master*, published by Elizabeth Newbery, 1787. Held at Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, PZ6.J68 T75 1787.
Full description
In the frontispiece, Bellinda and Horace each hold their mother's hand as they approach the “The Toy Shop.” The children point to the shop, creating an interlocutor gesture that compares the toys inside the shop to sermons or moral tales, both of which provide instruction when purchased. The Newbery frontispiece shown here is different from the one provided by F. Skill, since there is no suggestion in the image that this toyshop is also a bookshop.
