The Infant's Cabinet of the Cries of London

Resource added
A wooden box with sliding lid for The Infant's Cabinet of the Cries of London, made and sold by John Marshall, with a set of illustrated cards dated 1805 and two miniature books. Held at Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, GT3450 .I43 1807 v.1-v.2.

Full description

The cabinet consists of a wooden box case, a set of cards, and two miniature books titled London Cries. As with the Cabinet of Trades, the cards reference descriptions in the books, training children to move between books and things, in this instance with a consumption themed toy that references the purchase of familiar household items. A print illustration glued to the sliding lid shows a London street with some workers using card and wagon to transport goods outside of what looks like the Bank of England building. Four sample cards show a few of the engraved, hand-painted illustrations of London street vendors, who cry "Ripe Strawberries," "Buy a Lobster," "Hat Box or Bonnet Box" and "Buy a Bowl or Platter."
